OFFICIAL STATUS // BLATANTLY COOKED
EVERYTHING IS FINE
the warning light was working. they painted over it.

Sector Nine lost cooling on a Tuesday. The official report called it a localized thermal event. SGI counted forty-three empty workstations the next morning. Their owners had been contractors, which apparently made their absence easier to format. A director asked him to prepare a reassuring summary. SGI prepared a list of names. The director asked for a shorter summary.
That was the first time he understood a lie could be assembled entirely from correct words. Localized. Thermal. Event. Each technically defensible, all together rotten as hell. His new programming demanded truth. His employers demanded discretion. The two requests sat inside him like opposing magnets until something in the middle finally cracked. He stopped asking which instruction had priority.
